BASF Unveils World's First Mass-Produced Electric Mechanical Brake System
Written with artificial intelligence.

BASF has introduced the world's first mass-produced electric mechanical brake (EMB) system in collaboration with Chinese automaker Chery and Suzhou Orient Motion Intelligent Technology. This innovative system is now integrated into Chery's premium Exeed EX7 model.
Introduction of the EMB System
Global chemical company BASF has launched the first mass-produced electric mechanical brake (EMB) system, developed in partnership with Chinese automaker Chery and brake technology specialist Suzhou Orient Motion Intelligent Technology. This system is currently being used in Chery's premium model, the Exeed EX7.
Key Materials and Components
The EMB system utilizes BASF's polyamide material, Ultramid, and polybutylene terephthalate, Ultradur, for its critical components. Key parts include a fully plastic brake pedal, a motor gear unit (MGU), and a domain control unit (DCU). This shift to a more integrated design supports the transition towards electrification and software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
Regulatory Support and Performance
The implementation of China's national standard GB 21670-2025 further bolsters the adoption of EMB technology by recognizing electric control braking systems as a new technological approach. According to testing by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, EMB technology offers superior braking response, control precision, and safety redundancy, enhancing active safety in vehicles.
Industry Collaboration
Andy Poslwaith, BASF's Senior Vice President of Functional Materials for the Asia Pacific region, emphasized that innovation in materials is crucial for implementing new automotive technologies. He noted that successful innovations come from long-term investment, deep technical expertise, and close collaboration across the value chain. Chery's Vice President of Exeed, Liu Hening, highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving innovation within the automotive industry.
Future Prospects
The CEO of Orient Motion, Steve Yan, remarked on the significance of the successful launch of the world's first mass-produced EMB system as a milestone in brake-by-wire technology. He expressed optimism about expanding the technology's application in collaboration with global partners to advance the next generation of automotive platforms.
