BMW i3 Touring Electric Break Set for 2028 Production

The BMW i3 Touring, an electric variant of the Series 3, has been spotted undergoing tests ahead of its anticipated launch next year. This model will feature a refreshed design and aims to provide a practical alternative to SUVs.

Upcoming BMW i3 Touring

The BMW i3 Touring, the first electric wagon derived from the Series 3, is progressing towards production as indicated by recent spy footage. With its debut expected next year, this model will represent a shift in design language, featuring an elongated roofline that offers buyers a practical option amidst the SUV trend.

The prototype was seen testing near the Nürburgring, revealing less camouflage, suggesting that BMW is nearing the final design. The front end is likely to closely resemble the i3 sedan, while the rear will distinguish itself with a longer roof and redesigned hatchback. Notably, the rear window may not open independently, a feature already absent in the larger Series 5 Touring, which BMW attributes to aerodynamic considerations.

Features and Performance

When the i3 Touring launches, it is expected to share much of its interior with the i3 sedan, including a 17.9-inch central display and a new system called Panoramic Vision, which replaces traditional instrumentation with fixed tiles in the driver’s line of sight. An optional 3D head-up display will be available, while the familiar iDrive controller is gradually being phased out.

Range is expected to be a significant selling point, especially for wagon owners who often undertake longer journeys. The sedan version can achieve up to 912 km on a full charge under the WLTP cycle, although the Touring may have a slightly shorter range due to its added weight and less aerodynamic shape. However, it will still provide a reassuring range for those concerned about charging.

The i3 sedan's rapid charging capability of up to 400 kW is likely to carry over, allowing the Touring model to regain enough energy for 400 km of travel within just 10 minutes under ideal conditions.

Future Developments

Additionally, BMW is exploring a conventional thermal replacement for the current Series 3 Touring, which would share styling elements with the i3 Touring but utilize a different platform. Known internally as the G51, this version has yet to be officially approved. If it proceeds, it would employ BMW's CLAR architecture offering gasoline and plug-in hybrid options, while diesel seems to be phased out.

As manufacturers increasingly pivot towards crossovers, BMW's commitment to developing new wagons like the i3 Touring is a refreshing change. This model aims to demonstrate that the transition to electric does not necessitate abandoning traditional wagon designs. Enthusiasts of internal combustion engines may still hope for another generation of the Series 3 with a combustion engine, ideally featuring inline six-cylinder options for the M350 and M3 variants.
