Changan and CATL Aim for Solid-State Battery Production by 2027
Written with artificial intelligence.

Changan and CATL are collaborating to develop solid-state batteries, targeting production by 2027 with a range of up to 1,500 km. The partnership plans to expand production capacity significantly, aiming for 75 GWh and enhancing job opportunities in the region.
Partnership Expansion
Changan and CATL are advancing their partnership in the development of solid-state batteries, with plans to begin production by 2027. This initiative aims to create batteries with a range of up to 1,500 km, which is based on the CLTC urban driving cycle, translating to approximately 1,200-1,230 km in the mixed WLTP cycle.
Increased Production Capacity
The companies announced their plans through an interactive platform owned by the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, confirming an increase in production capacity from 50 GWh to 75 GWh. This expansion involves constructing a new 700,000 square meter facility in the Chongqing region, with an investment of 5 billion yuan (approximately 668.55 million euros).
Economic and Employment Impact
This development is anticipated to create around 2,500 jobs and generate roughly 40 million euros in tax revenue for the local economy. With the goal of providing cost-effective solid-state batteries, this collaboration seeks to enhance battery performance as the technology is crucial for electric vehicle production.
Presence in Europe
Changan and CATL’s joint venture is already operational in Europe, supplying batteries for Changan's Deepal models and the NEVO and Avatr ranges. Their batteries, called Golden Bell, aim to maintain capacity for at least 600,000 km, with a lifespan exceeding 5,000 charging cycles and ultra-fast charging capabilities.
Future Goals
Changan aims for a battery energy density of 400 Wh/kg, claiming a 70% improvement in safety through AI diagnostics. The first road tests of their Golden Bell battery are expected to commence by the end of 2026, with commercial production slated for 2027, indicating a gradual adoption of this new technology.
