Written with artificial intelligence.

The EU automotive market is experiencing growth, with electric vehicles gaining popularity. In the first eight months of this year, battery electric vehicles made up 21.7% of new registrations, significantly up from the previous year.
Market Growth Overview
The automotive market in the European Union has shown continued growth, with new car registrations increasing by 3% in July and 4.5% in August compared to the same months last year. Overall, there has been a 5.3% rise in new registrations for the first eight months of the year, totaling 7.55 million cars.
Rise of Electric Vehicles
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 21.7% of new registrations, marking an increase of nearly six percentage points from the previous year. Plug-in hybrids made up 10% of the market. The growth in electric vehicles is attributed to a broader model range and sales incentives in various countries. Fuel prices, especially since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, have also contributed to this shift.
Competition from Chinese Brands
Chinese manufacturers are gaining traction in the EU market, with BYD increasing its market share from 0.9% to 2.4%. Other Chinese brands, including SAIC Motor and Chery Automobile, also saw increases in their market presence. The total market share of these Chinese companies has risen to 9.6%, up from 6.2% last year. In contrast, Volkswagen reported a decline of approximately 3% in car sales during July and August compared to the previous year, indicating increased competition.
Country-Specific Trends
Significant growth in electric vehicle registrations was observed in major EU markets: France (+74.2%), Germany (+53.1%), and Denmark (+40.9%). Smaller markets like Croatia and Bulgaria also reported substantial increases. In contrast, Poland experienced a slight decline in electric vehicle registrations, down 2.1% compared to last year.
Future Outlook
The market share of hybrid vehicles remains the largest at 36.6%, with hybrids growing from 34.7% last year. The overall trend suggests that electric vehicles will likely surpass gasoline vehicles in market share by the end of the year, as the share of gasoline vehicles continues to decline.
