General Motors Introduces OnStar AI and Concept Horizon for Autonomous Driving Era
Written with artificial intelligence.

General Motors (GM) unveiled OnStar AI and a new mobile app during the GM Forward event on October 21 in New York. The initiative aims to enhance vehicle functionality through AI and reimagine in-car spaces for work and leisure as part of a vision for the future of autonomous driving.
Introduction of OnStar AI
At the GM Forward event in New York, General Motors (GM) announced the integration of artificial intelligence into its global connectivity service, OnStar, alongside plans for a new mobile application. This development is part of GM's vision for how customers will utilize their travel time in an era of autonomous driving.
Features of OnStar AI
The OnStar AI Assistant will utilize natural language voice commands to control vehicle functions and provide guidance on vehicle status and operation. Customers can adjust indoor temperatures, check driving ranges, and receive routing assistance that includes charging stops. The system will also explain warning lights and features specific to different vehicle models, all tailored to individual user settings and privacy preferences. If more help is needed, customers can connect with an OnStar advisor for real-time support.
Future App and Connected Camera
Set to launch in 2027, the new OnStar mobile app will allow users to access necessary information outside the vehicle. The OnStar AI Assistant will function within this app, replacing existing OnStar Guardian and brand-specific apps. The Connected Camera feature will capture and securely upload videos during specific situations, providing notifications to users. Families can coordinate pickups and manage multiple vehicles through the OnStar Family feature.
Vision for Autonomous Driving
GM also showcased the Concept Horizon, which reimagines the in-car environment for work, relaxation, and leisure as driving becomes fully autonomous. The concept emphasizes an integrated user interface that responds to customer preferences and situations. GM envisions a future where vehicles can perform tasks such as grocery shopping, laundry pick-ups, and safe transportation of family members, fundamentally changing the role of driving in daily life.
