Toyota Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Hilux for Dakar 2027

Toyota has introduced the DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle designed for the challenging Dakar Rally 2027. This prototype will compete in the experimental Dakar Future Mission 1000 category, emitting only water during operation.
Introduction of the DKR GR FC Hilux
Toyota has unveiled the DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen-powered variant of its competitive Hilux. This vehicle is engineered to participate in the Dakar Rally 2027, specifically in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category, which emphasizes experimental and innovative vehicles. The rally will take place in Saudi Arabia from January 1 to 15, 2027.
Innovative Hydrogen Technology
The DKR GR FC Hilux replaces the traditional combustion engine with a hydrogen fuel cell electric system, allowing it to emit no CO2 and only release water from the exhaust. While Toyota is developing a fully electric battery version for commercial use, this model serves as a prototype to explore hydrogen technology's capabilities in extreme rally conditions.
Development and Partnerships
The prototype is being developed at Toyota's European research and development center near Brussels, Belgium. GAZOO Racing is adapting the fuel cell technology to withstand the grueling demands of the Dakar Rally, which includes high temperatures, dust, and rough terrain. Toyota is collaborating with partners such as Jameel Motorsport, DENSO, TOYO TIRES, and IAV to enhance the project's development.
Commitment to Sustainable Competition
Officials from the supporting organizations expressed enthusiasm for the project's potential to advance sustainable motorsport. Munir Khoja from Jameel Motorsport highlighted the opportunity to promote sustainable competition, while DENSO's CEO, Kenichiro Ito, emphasized the importance of testing hydrogen technology under challenging conditions. IAV's CEO, Jörg Astalosch, noted that pushing technological boundaries is crucial for innovation.
Through the DKR GR FC Hilux, Toyota aims not only to compete but also to gather valuable data on hydrogen technology for future applications in sustainable mobility.
