Audi Q9 PHEV Spotted Ahead of 2027 Launch

The Audi Q9, the brand's largest SUV, is now available globally with a diesel engine. Spy photos reveal the fully uncovered PHEV version expected to launch in 2027, crucial for the European market amid rising emissions regulations.

Overview of the Audi Q9

Audi's largest SUV, the Q9, is officially on sale worldwide, marking a significant expansion of the brand’s lineup. With a length of over 5.2 meters, it competes directly with luxury models like the Mercedes GLS. Currently, the Q9 is available with a diesel TDI engine featuring a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 299 hp, equipped with quattro all-wheel drive and a Tiptronic automatic transmission.

PHEV Version Revealed

Recent spy images have unveiled the Q9's plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version without any camouflage. This PHEV variant includes specific identifiers such as an electric hazard warning on the windshield and the rear window, mandatory for high-voltage battery prototypes. Additionally, the location of the charging port on the left rear fender confirms its hybrid status.

Performance and Variants

The Q9 PHEV aims to cater to the European market, where emissions regulations are tightening. Audi plans to offer at least two PHEV configurations, with the entry-level option expected to deliver a combined power of 367 hp. A more powerful variant will utilize a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. These details align with the brand’s strategy to compete effectively against other large luxury SUVs.

Anticipated Launch Timeline

While Audi has not confirmed the exact launch date for the Q9 PHEV, deliveries for the diesel version are set to begin in November from their Bratislava plant. Given the current development stage indicated by the spy photos, the PHEV version is anticipated to arrive sometime in 2027, possibly extending into 2028.
