Mazda's Next-Gen MX-5 Aims for Lightweight Design and Future Electric Options
Mazda is focusing on maintaining the lightweight nature of its MX-5 (known as the Roadster) while exploring electric vehicle possibilities. The upcoming NE model is being developed to balance traditional lightweight characteristics with the demands of electrification and regulatory changes.

Mazda's MX-5, known as the Roadster, has always emphasized lightweight design over high engine displacement and power. As the automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles and stricter environmental regulations, Mazda is compelled to rethink how it can maintain this lightweight ethos in the upcoming NE model.
Development Insights
Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto spoke to the German automotive magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" about the development direction for the next-generation Roadster. He stated that the next model must be able to accommodate scenarios without internal combustion engines. While this does not confirm the Roadster's transition to a fully electric vehicle, Mazda USA has mentioned that various powertrain options are being considered in light of future regulations.
Weight Considerations
A significant challenge lies in managing the weight of potential battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which typically weigh more due to battery and motor components. Marumoto indicated that the team aims to achieve a weight target slightly below 1000 kg, reaching up to 1200 kg at maximum, without relying on exotic materials like carbon fiber. There is currently no clarity on how this weight will be distributed across different powertrains, including BEVs.
Future Powertrains
The upcoming Roadster is expected to feature Mazda's new-generation 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine, known as SKYACTIV-Z, which is positioned as a cornerstone engine for the electric era. This engine is planned to debut in the next CX-5 with a hybrid system by 2027, and it is likely that the Roadster will also adopt this engine while potentially integrating hybrid technology that maintains its lightweight nature.
Timeline and Brand Vision
No official launch date has been provided, but analysts suggest the next-generation Roadster may not arrive until 2028 or later. This extended timeline indicates that the current ND model will continue to be sold for a significant period, having debuted in 2015. Additionally, Marumoto expressed a desire to have a flagship "hero car" in Mazda's lineup, focusing on special, potentially hand-crafted sports cars rather than high-volume sales. The development of the next Roadster will prioritize maintaining its lightweight and the 'Jinba Ittai' driving experience, regardless of the powertrain used.
