Stellantis Enhances Peugeot Hybrid Models with Larger Battery Capacity
Stellantis is testing upgraded versions of the Peugeot 208 Hybrid and 308 Hybrid, featuring a larger battery to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The enhanced models are expected to launch in 2027 as part of Stellantis's broader electrification strategy.
Improved Hybrid Technology
Stellantis is addressing the limitations of its mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEV) by introducing enhanced versions of the Peugeot 208 Hybrid and Peugeot 308 Hybrid. Spy photos reveal these prototypes without camouflage, indicating that they are in active testing on roads in southern Europe.
New Battery Features
The upcoming models will utilize a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which includes a small electric motor rated at 21 kW (29 hp) and 51 Nm of torque. This motor is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is powered by a battery with increased capacity. The new battery, now at 0.9 kWh, aims to improve vehicle efficiency by allowing for greater electric assistance, thereby lowering fuel consumption and emissions.
Future Launch Plans
Stellantis plans to launch the updated Peugeot hybrids in 2027, coinciding with the introduction of new electric vans and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to enhance the company's multi-energy vehicle offerings in response to tightening regulations and increasing competition, particularly from Chinese automakers. The enhancements will also apply to other brands under the Stellantis umbrella, including Citroën, Opel, and Fiat.
