Mercedes-AMG Launches GLC 53 4MATIC+ with Drift Mode
On September 18, Mercedes-Benz Japan unveiled the Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ SUV and Coupe, featuring a starting price of ¥12,750,000. This model introduces the first-ever Drift Mode for AMG SUVs and offers enhanced performance through a new inline-six turbo engine.
Introduction of the GLC 53 4MATIC+
Mercedes-Benz Japan has released the sporty Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ SUV and Coupe, expanding the premium mid-size GLC lineup. The SUV is priced at ¥12,750,000, while the Coupe starts at ¥13,180,000. A limited edition, the "Edition Dark Performance," is also available.
Enhanced Performance Features
The GLC 53 is powered by a revised 3.0-liter inline-six turbo engine (M256M EVO), featuring a new cylinder head, intake camshaft, upgraded intake system, and intercooler. These enhancements deliver a maximum output of 330 kW (449 hp) and a peak torque of 600 Nm, which can increase to 640 Nm during overboost for up to 10 seconds.
Equipped with a second-generation Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a 48V electrical system, the model provides short bursts of power and regenerative braking. The transmission, "AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G," offers quick shifts and multi-downshifting capabilities.
Notable Features
The GLC 53 comes standard with the fully variable all-wheel drive system "AMG 4MATIC+" and rear-axle steering (up to 2.5 degrees). This steering enhances agility at speeds below 100 km/h and improves stability at higher speeds.
With the optional "AMG Dynamic Package," the GLC 53 introduces Drift Mode, allowing the vehicle to operate as a rear-wheel drive in all speed ranges, managed by an electronically controlled AMG limited-slip differential.
Suspension and Driving Modes
It features the "AMG RIDE CONTROL" suspension system developed in Affalterbach, offering three damping characteristics: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The braking system includes 390×36 mm ventilated discs with six-piston fixed calipers in the front and 360×26 mm discs with one-piston floating calipers in the rear.
Five driving modes are available: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual, with the addition of a "RACE" mode when the AMG Dynamic Package is selected.
Limited Edition "Edition Dark Performance"
The limited edition "Edition Dark Performance" will be available in 50 SUV and 100 Coupe units, totaling 150 vehicles. It features colors like Obsidian Black (metallic) and MANUFAKTUR Graphite Grey Magno (matte) as an optional upgrade. The edition includes exclusive 21-inch AMG forged wheels, AMG Night Package, and unique decals.
The interior offers black leather with macchiato beige stitching and comes standard with AMG carbon fiber trim with copper accents. The retail prices for this limited edition are ¥15,580,000 for the SUV and ¥15,850,000 for the Coupe.
